Military History Tours Australia          On Tour - Gallipoli Remembered - 9 May 2009

Today we undertook an in-depth tour of the battlefields we started at Anzac Cove where the Dawn landings took place 94 years ago, then ascended the heights to Plugge’s Plateaux as our ancestors did. On the plateux we could see the remains of the original entrenchments that overlook Shrapnel Valley. We took a breather and proceeded to the restaurant for a well deserved lunch break.

In the afternoon we returned to the Battlefields for presentations on the August 1915 offensive at Suvla Bay where the British under Sopford landed and waited, the Nek where the folly of John Bull Antill saw the demise of the 8th and 10th Light Horse, Pope’s and Quinn’s Post where B Squadron of the 1st Light Horse was sacrificed, 4th Bn Parade Ground (which was the assembly area for the assault on Lone Pine) and Lone Pine itself, site of the magnificent , costly and pointless victory by the Australian Infantry.
