The Battle for Singapore 71st Anniversary
Join Military History Tours (Australia) (MHT) as we attend the
71st Anniversary Service for the fall of Singapore.
On January 31st 1942, the Allied forces in Malaya withdraw across the causeway that separated Singapore from Malaya. Percival spread his men across the entire coastline of the island leaving himself spread too thinly, even though he had 90,000 British, Indian and Australian troops under his command. On February
8th, 1942, 23,000 Japanese soldiers attacked Singapore. At 8.30 pm on February 8, Australian machine gunners opened fire on vessels carrying a first wave of 4,000 Japanese troops towards Singapore Island. The victory by the Japanese Force stunned the world and they took 100,000 men prisoner in Singapore. Amongst the deaths in captivity, 9000 of these men were to die while building the Burma-Thailand railway.
This being the
71st Anniversary of the surrender and the commencement of such a horrific time for our force, we would invite you join us as we attend the Official Commemoration Service at 0700 on 15th February 2013 and to take in with us this short campaign that means so much in Australian history. The Australian
